Most of us want to reach old age but getting older doesn't come for free.
Osteoarthritis, a painful and often incapacitating condition caused by years of wear and tear on the joints, is one of the costs of living a long life for many of us.
In fact, by the time we are 65, knee X-rays will show signs of osteoarthritis in at least a third of us. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of a group of diseases called arthritis. Estimates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta show that arthritis, which means "inflammation of the joints," affects about 60 million (or one in four) Americans.
Arthritis is the most common cause of disability in this country. It affects more than seven million adults and makes it hard for them to do everyday things.
Osteoarthritis is the most diagnosed type of arthritis in America. It affects tens of millions of adults, especially seniors in the United States. Osteoarthritis occurs when the cartilage (tissue that acts as a cushion at the ends of the bones within the joints) breaks down and erodes.
