The locals call it the Bone Yard or Little Hunting Island, but it's actually just Hunting Island's Natural Reserve located at the South end. After Hurricane Matthew hit the area back in 2015, Hunting Island was left in ruins. A lot of time, expense, patience and hundreds of volunteers, allowed most of the park to return to its natural splendor! The campground was reopened, the lighthouse still stands tall and the debris was removed from the public beach areas. But- if you keep walking, and walking and walking down the main beach... you will arrive at The Bone Yard. There are other ways to reach this hauntingly beautiful beach, but this is my favorite. (Tide willing. Lol) Just walking through this area of fallen trees in various stages of decay looks like Mother Natures art studio where she has been using the salt water to smooth out rough bark and sunshine to bleach her beautiful, elegant sculptures. A perfect, peaceful stretch of beach for watching the sun come up or a gorgeous sunset. There are hiking trails, but my happy place is near the water, keeping the gentle, fallen giants company for just a little while. 2555 Sea Island Parkway, Hunting Island, SC
