What are superfoods
Superfood is a generic name for a high-quality food with extra high nutrients, antioxidants and/or phytonutrients (see Annex 1). In addition to the enormously high nutritional values, superfoods have many other features that are good for our health. Most superfoods that are offered in the store are organic, raw, and they are often harvested in areas where the soil is not very exhausted. Raw foodies (people who eat only unprocessed and unheated food) have been eating superfoods for years due to this reason. There are different types of superfoods, such as algae, mushrooms, wild herbs, fruit, seeds, foods with some good fatty acids, germs and grasses. Superfoods are not always exotics. Ordinary foods like broccoli, ginger, garlic and turmeric, are also classified as superfoods.
And why should I eat them
Several scientific studies and reports mention the sometimes terrifying, decrease in the nutritional value in our daily foods. The Swiss company Geigly for example, reported in a report from 2011 that the amount of calcium in broccoli from 1985 to 2002 decreased with 73%, magnesium in carrots by 71% and the amount of vitamin C in strawberries by 87%. Because by eating ordinary fruits and vegetables people do not take in enough vitamins, many people live (mostly unconsciously) with shortages of certain nutrients. Especially if they fit into a risk group, such as people who have experienced a stressful period or are pregnant.
Because of the loss of nutrients by depleted agricultural soils, air pollution and other impurities, it turns out even with a balanced and healthy diet, you often need to supplement your diet with something extra, such as superfoods or vitamin supplements.
Each superfood will have its own qualities and each will play a different role in a balanced diet. There are superfoods that have mild aphrodisiac qualities and others which have a rejuvenating effect or provide stronger bones. Also, some superfoods can help you in losing weight. It almost sounds too simple to be true doesn’t it? Read-on. Without having to think about it, you will automatically get to your goal weight, through daily use of saturating superfood smoothies.
